Three Things for EO Nashville This Week  

1.  Buyers and Sellers - Dream it, Build it, Sell it!

EO’ers across the globe work tirelessly in chase of what some call the pinnacle of the entrepreneurial experience, “Selling the Business”.  So many in our own chapter have completed this trifecta and this Member Exclusive Event will allow them to share their experiences with the entire chapter.  Business turnaround savant, Steve Curnutte, will moderate a legendary panel of Nashville EO’ers (Michael Brody-Waite, Sherry Deutschmann, Joe Freedman, Arnie Malham, Mike Rustici and Tom Turner) about the successes, regrets, and lessons learned from these business transactions. 

2.  Family Feud - EO Style!
February 16, 2019, 7:00pm-11:00pm, Ole Red, 300 Broadway

Let’s step back to the 80s and your TV set- whether it had bunny ears or a slide cable box! And, what better way to celebrate and build house camaraderie than with the classic television game show Family Feud- LIVE with EO Houses competing!  Questions will be EO Nashville tailored ranging from informative to frivolous, serious, funny or anywhere in between!  We will even transition from Family Feud to MTV with tunes from the 80's! 

You won't want to miss this LIVE game show complete with show set center podiums, buzzers and SURVEY SAYS game board.   So dress the part, grab your favorite date and join us to celebrate the 80s!

3. Chapter Retreat in Austin, TX
March 28, 2019- March 30, 2019

We are going to be keeping it weird in ATX on our 5th annual retreat with spouses/significant others! We have a block at the W and we’re working on a full agenda to share, including behind-the-scenes with Austin’s renowned entrepreneurial community, the best brisket in all of Texas, and entertainment in the “Live Music Capital of the World®.” 

There are deals to be had on Southwest to arrive in Austin on March 28th (cocktails will be served at 5pm!) with a departure on Saturday, March 30th. You are also welcome to stay over on your own to explore more of Austin.  Line up the sitters, clear 48 hours and commit to this adventure that only EO can deliver.  Space is limited, so REGISTER TODAY!

Alex Tolbert [BerniePortal] penned an article for the Tennessean about three trends that could change healthcare for consumers in 2019. He also wrote an article for Employee Benefits Adviser offering trends that will shape the benefits industry in the coming year.

In the News:

Andy Bailey [Petra Coach] was quoted in a Forbes article about tips for businesses looking to pivot. The Charleston Regional Business Journal reported on an Entrepreneur’s Organization event where Bailey presented.

Bernard Health [Alex Tolbert] will be moving their offices from Midtown to downtown in March, as reported by the Nashville Post. The Nashville Post also covered the news in a different article.

The Nashville Entrepreneur Center [Michael Brody-Waite] and Hytch [Robert Hartline] were mentioned in a Nashville Business Journal article about a new entrepreneur center coming to Williamson County.

DWC Construction [John Arndt] was mentioned in the Nashville Post for handling the renovations of a new downtown office space for a Silicon Valley-based professional services recruiting firm.

David Waddell [Waddell and Associates] was featured on Bloomberg TV discussing the recession risk, rate hikes and restraint.

The Tennessean and the Nashville Business Journal reported on the selling of two local restaurants, one of which Charles Robert Bone [Bone McAllester Norton] is an investor. The Tennessean referenced the law firm as the location of a press conference given by Cyntoia Brown’s lawyers after clemency was granted. A former Bone McAllester Norton lawyer declared candidacy for the 2020 Senate race, as reported by the Tennessean.

The Herald Dispatch reported that an Anchor Investments [Micah Lacher] Huntington property is being renovated from a Kmart into a new Big Lots store.

Judith Bright [Judith Bright, LLC], Edley’s Bar-B-Que [Will Newman] and Burger Up [Jim Lewis] were mentioned in StyleBlueprint as places to eat and shop in the 12 South neighborhood.

The Nashville Business Journal and the Nashville Post reported that Village Real Estate Services [Mark Deutschmann] sold to a new ownership group comprised of six veteran agents, including Deutschmann who will maintain a minority stake in the company.

Eater Nashville listed the most essential restaurants in Nashville this season, which included Two Ten Jack [Patrick Burke], Josephine [Jim Lewis], Henrietta Red and Bastion [Benjamin and Max Goldberg].

The Bradford Group [Jeff Bradford] and Lovell Communications [Rosemary Plorin] were included in the “In Charge” issue of Nashville Medical News for being among the nation’s premier healthcare communicators and strategists.

The Nashville Scene referenced Strategic Hospitality and Merchants [Benjamin and Max Goldberg] for a local chef joining the Strategic Hospitality team. Eater Nashville included the Patterson House and Bastion on their list of the 15 most essential bars in Nashville. Bastion was referenced in a Nashville Scene article as the neighbor of a Wedgewood-Houston bar. The beverage director at Patterson House, Pinewood Social and Le Sel was quoted in a Chowhound article about drinking low-alcohol cocktails in January. Styleblueprint listed Pinewood Social as a place to find great avocado toast in Nashville, and the Courier Journal referenced the restaurant as a place to “drink and play” as the trend rises in Louisville. The Nashville Scene featured Catbird Seat’s new chef team, which was announced last month. The chef and sommelier who teamed up with Strategic Hospitality to open Henrietta Red were interviewed in a Nashville Business Journal article.

Bell & Associates [Darek Bell] was featured in a Construction Dive article for being selected to perform construction services for the Nashville Yards development.

Rambler Cocktail Bar [Austin Ray] was mentioned in a Nashville Scene article on places to eat to keep your New Year’s resolutions.

The Nashville Post and the Nashville Business Journal reported on Novatech’s [Darren Metz] purchase of Consolidated Copier Services (CCS), an independent document management and copier dealership servicing the greater Atlanta area.

ST8MNT [Bethany Newman] was mentioned in the Chattanoogan for a former employee joining a Chattanooga-based marketing group.

Nashville Business Journal reported that Eakin Partners [Barry Smith] is planning to purchase 30 acres of the mixed-use development site Century Farms in Antioch.

Strategic Alliance Partner News:

Charles Grant [Baker Donelson] was quoted in the Daily Memphian discussing a recent ruling in a school funding lawsuit filed against the State of Tennessee by Memphis-based Shelby County Schools and Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools. John Scannapieco was quoted in a Forbes article discussing the latest developments in the trade war with China.

Greg Luken

Greg Luken is the founder of Luken Investment Analytics, a quantitative research and asset management firm. Luken previously founded and ran a Broker/Dealer, a Registered Investment Advisor and was a founding shareholder in a web-based pricing platform for non-standardized derivative securities used by institutional trading desks.  He authored the book Retire With Confidence, Your Toolbox For Financial Independence and his articles have appeared in Forbes, Financial Advisor Magazine, Wealth Management Magazine, Tampa Medical News and The Nashville Business Journal.  He received his first securities registration in 1988. Luken is a member of the Forbes Finance Council and a frequent guest on financial networks such as Fox Business News, Nightly Business Report, Bloomberg Radio and Reuters TV. He is a graduate of Baylor University.

What is a personal piece of advice (business advice/saying/quote) that you lean on and could pass on to others?

Treat everyone you meet as though their heart is breaking. Because it probably is.

Best business book you’ve ever read?

Proverbs. (The one between Psalms and Ecclesiastes.) It’s almost like a bathroom reader.

One misstep you took in your business that you could caution others about?

Hiring too fast and firing too slow: and when I started to have second thoughts about an employee, not making them my first thoughts.

How to you de-stress after a particularly hard day?

Sling a leg over my motocross bike and spend a couple hours getting muddy at the track.
What EO event are you most looking forward to attending in the next few months?

Buyers and Sellers – Dream it, Build it, Sell it!  And Forum. Always Forum.
What’s something about you that would surprise everyone reading this?

When I was little I wanted to be like Superman. So, exactly like Superman, I also wore my underwear on the OUTSIDE of my pants.

Any exciting plans for 2019 that you would like to share?

There just might be a new mutual fund launch in 2019 employing our proprietary strategy! I can’t say more. Yet.
