Richard Moscardelli
615 Real Property

Richard Moscardelli grew up in Lebanon, TN. and graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1994 with a degree in History.  He began his career in sales with locally owned American Paper and Twine, and soon moved to Dallas, TX to work for a 100% recycled paperboard mill.  In 1999, he and his father started PFP, LLC, a manufacturing company focused on supplying the manufacturers of Commercial and Industrial air filters.  PFP enjoyed rapid growth, and they opened a second facility in TX in 2008.  Sales grew to the point that they would ship product coast to coast, and into Mexico and Canada weekly.  The company ultimately enjoyed a successful exit in mid-2018 after they sold the business to one of their major suppliers.

For fun, Richard likes to hang with his kids, listen to live music, play poker, snow ski, fly airplanes, and watch the Preds.

What is a personal piece of advice (business advice/saying/quote) that you lean on and could pass on to others?

A mentor at one of my first jobs (a paper mill in TX) told me to make sure that we “sell what we make.”  What drove him to that comment was that there was another salesperson who always wanted us to tweak and change our product to fit into another industry or application.  Every tweak created difficulty in the manufacturing process, which led to lower efficiency, which led to lower profits, and frankly, lower employee morale.

Early on in our original business (PFP, LLC), we focused on being great at one type of product, paperboard air filter frames.  Mike and I felt like the air filter market would support our “singlemindedness,” and that clarity helped us stand out against our competitors who were more interested in trying to be all things to all people.

I also like the advice Dalton gives in Roadhouse….”Be nice!”

Best business book you’ve ever read?

Built to Sell, by John Warrillow and the original Financial Peace by Dave Ramsey (circa mid 1990’s) were the most impactful business/money related books I’ve read.

One misstep you took in your business that you could caution others about?

In a moment of weakness, we extended credit to some companies that didn’t deserve it.  That was expensive tuition.

How to you de-stress after a particularly hard day?

Hiking the Red Trail, the White Trail, or the loop at Percy Warner.

What EO event are you most looking forward to attending in the next few months?

GLC-Cape Town in late April.  I’ve never been to Africa and I’m excited to check another continent off of the travel list.  I’m going to be out of town during “We Built this City,” and I’m really sad to be missing that!

What’s something about you that would surprise everyone reading this?

If you look quickly enough, you may see me in a Heavy Metal music video (RATT: Slip of the Lip) that was filmed in Municipal Auditorium way back in 1987…..mullet and all.

Any exciting plans for Winter that you would like to share?

Headed to Breck with 10 or so other people from EO Nashville to ski later this month.  Looking forward to hanging out with those folks.
