Derek Gunn
Elan Skin
Derek Gunn grew up in Franklin, TN and graduated from the University of Tennessee in 2002 with a degree in Finance, followed by a Master of Finance degree from Georgia State University. He and his wife Shayna (along with a very good chocolate lab named Liz) moved to Jackson, WY immediately after their wedding in 2004. After a couple of wonderful months working at the Orvis fly-fishing shop, Derek joined StreetAccount, a start-up investment research firm that was later acquired by publicly owned FactSet. After spending 15 years at StreetAccount, specializing in company-level analysis and managing teams in Jackson Hole and Boston, he made a move into business ownership with the purchase of Elan Skin in 2019, a medical spa located in Green Hills. He is a full-time owner/operator and wife Shayna is also an integral part of the team. They are very excited about their new venture and being a part of the local business community. When not still getting acclimated to entrepreneurship, you might find Derek playing golf or hanging out with three kids ages 9-13.
What is a personal piece of advice (business advice/saying/quote) that you lean on and could pass on to others?
My father always encouraged me to actively seek out the counsel of others, particularly those who might have traveled your path beforehand. I spent over two years looking for a business to purchase and was constantly reaching out to acquaintances and friends-of-friends during that time for advice and also to keep my spirits up. Every single conversation proved fruitful – there were a number of instances that I assumed were going to be boring or vanilla, but ended up being some of the most helpful. When looking back, I’m still amazed at the willingness of people to carve out a little time to help someone. I’d encourage others to be bold in seeking out conversations for advice, people are often very generous when approached for counsel (and usually like to talk about themselves!).
Best business book you’ve ever read
I wish I had one book that unlocked the best in me, led to a lot of great decisions and that I could recommend to the group to potentially do the same thing. Unfortunately that’s not the case, so I’d probably go with The Big Short by Michael Lewis. While a 10+ year bull market has erased a lot of memories from the subprime crisis, I’ll always be fascinated and impacted by having worked in the investment world during that time and watching it unfold. Lehman Brothers was one of our biggest clients. Plus I think there are great takeaways on boldness and conviction, balanced by the fact that timing often matters more than anything. “The market can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent.” (John Keynes).
One misstep you took in your business that you could caution others about
In my old job, I let a bad manager impact my enthusiasm for the company and became too disconnected from others across the company to avoid him. I should have fought harder for the different teams I was managing so that they would be impacted much less by a difficult presence.
How to you de-stress after a particularly hard day
Currently by watching the Ken Burns documentary on Country Music, so interesting having been born here and with the musical influence on the city. More often though, hopefully playing some golf or spending time outdoors with my kids – and trying to get our new border collie to be as obedient as our old lab.
What EO event are you most looking forward to attending in the next few months
As a new member, I was very interested in the Connectivity event but had a last-minute work trip pop up. I attended the first We Built This City and thought it was great – seems like a great potential series and am hoping to catch more of them.
What’s something about you that would surprise everyone reading this?
I worked out of a home office for StreetAccount and some of my work could be done with music in the background. I was so intrigued when Spotify launched and offered the ability to listen to whatever you want on demand that I decided to tackle Rolling Stones’ Top 500 Albums list from top to bottom. I’d guess around ~450 were available and took me about a year.
Any exciting plans for Winter that you would like to share?
Heading to Telluride to ski with my family for spring break, always some of our favorite times together as a family. Otherwise very excited for a new season and hopefully a little less rain this spring.
