Relationship Hack from Deborah Vahle, SLP Co-Chair

Matt and I, like everyone else in this group, lead very busy, full lives, and when I went back to working full time a couple years ago, we found ourselves out of alignment with our schedules, which can be very frustrating with four kids needing to be here and there at the same time.

In addition to adding 3 monthly whiteboard calendars to our kitchen (this month, next, and the next), Matt had an amazing idea for us to have a standing weekly meeting time, just the two of us, while the kids are at school. Because I'm in SLP forum, we are both familiar with monthly updates, getting to the 5%, staying on time, etc., so Matt took the forum update and adapted it for us to use during these meetings. He added things like "What do you have going on this week that [your spouse] needs to know about?" and 5% things like "What air needs to be cleared? (Receiver, listen with empathy)"

It has been a huge help for both of us, and I certainly appreciate the communication-even when the conversations are tough. Some weeks we are rushed and we get through the meeting quickly. Some weeks we are able to take more time and dive deeper on certain topics. In my experience, this has helped us stay connected and things that would take months to surface (and then blow up--amiright?) now get discussed over a few weeks instead.
