EO Member Spotlight

Allen Baler

4Patriots, LLC

Allen Baler is the co-founder of 4Patriots, LLC, a direct-to-consumer e-commerce company that helps Americans become more independent and self-reliant. After spending nearly 15 years learning marketing in the corporate world, Allen and his wife Erin moved from the Northeast to Nashville, Tennessee in 2008 where they founded 4Patriots, with the goal of creating a company that delivers great products at a great value, treats every customer like they would want to be treated, and is a great place for great people to work. Since its founding, the business has grown from a two-person, kitchen table startup to a company that employs over 90 people.

What is a personal piece of advice (business advice/saying/quote) that you lean on and could pass on to others?

“You must never confuse faith that you will prevail in the end — which you can never afford to lose — with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be.” – Admiral James Stockdale.

This quote has helped me power through the toughest business challenges with a clear eye and yet a profound belief that in the end, we will overcome and win.

Best business book you’ve ever read?

It’s a tie between The Hard Thing About Hard Things (great advice about being a CEO during “wartime”) and Ready, Fire, Aim! (spot-on experience sharing about the growth stages for a direct-to-consumer brand).

One misstep you took in your business that you could caution others about?

Treat potential partners in your business as you would a potential spouse. Get crystal-clear on your roles, responsibilities and goals before you go into business together. Take the time to draft a comprehensive operating agreement that covers this and make sure you have a clear “buy-sell” clause so that you and your partner have an explicit process if one of you chooses to separate in the future.

How to you de-stress after a particularly hard day?

A shot of bourbon helps, especially when you’ve been introduced to the “good stuff” by your forum mates Darek Bell (Corsair) and Max Goldberg (Strategic Hospitality; have you seen the juice he stores in his pool house?!). Also, a bi-weekly massage here at the house helps a bunch too.

What EO event are you most looking forward to attending in the next few months?

Moveable Feast is a can’t miss EO event in my book, as is the Holiday Party.

What’s something about you that would surprise everyone reading this?

EO’s “Second in Command” program and the Spousal Forums have been absolute game-changers for me, my wife & business partner Erin and my company. I highly recommend you explore both ASAP.

Any exciting plans for 2019 that you would like to share?

We’re working hard to master paid advertising on social media channels like Facebook, Instagram and YouTube in 2019. We come from the “old school” of direct mail, radio and DRTV, and it’s been a huge learning for our team to take the tied-and-true principles of direct marketing and adapt to social media.
